NotesIn the election there will be a total of 150 electorates. This is one fewer than at the 2022 election, as two electorates were abolished due to redistributions by the AEC, and one new one – Bullwinkel in Western Australia – was created. The list of candidates includes only those announced by the major parties and prominent minor parties to date. It will be updated with the full list of confirmed candidates when that becomes available.

Questions like: “Is someone who earns over $150,000 a year rich?”, or “how much does the average Australian earn?” seem like they should be easy to answer. However, in practice both questions are tricky. For the latter you need to figure out whether you mean the “typical” Australian or the mean; whether or not to include only people who are employed, and so on. For the former question, people disagree on the definition of “rich”.

Big food manufacturers are downsizing products without downsizing prices in a practice known as “shrinkflation” that irritates shoppers and makes pricing comparisons in a cost-of-living crisis all the more difficult. After the chief executive of Kellogg’s suggested that financially-strained families could cope by eating “cereal for dinner”, researchers at Deakin University investigated whether the US food giant had also been shrinking its products in Australia, reducing value for money.
