The Government risked “throwing good money after bad” in its negotiations over the Scunthorpe steelworks, the Chancellor has said. Taking questions about whether ministers would bring the North Lincolnshire steelworks into public ownership, Rachel Reeves pledged that the Government would “play a big role” in its future. MPs gathered in Westminster last weekend, when Parliament was recalled from recess on a Saturday for the first time since the Falklands War in 1982.
Testing the waters for housing in Horley field

A Permission in Principle planning application has been submitted for land to the east of Manor Farm in Horley. The site, which is opposite the village’s cricket pitch, backs onto the gardens of properties on Gulliver’s Close. Permission in Principle is an alternative way of obtaining planning permission for housing-led developments, which is split into two stages. The first stage establishes whether a site is suitable in-principle.
Waste Recycling Centre will be busy over Easter weekend

Anyone planning to visit the Farthinghoe Waste Recycling Centre over the Easter weekend is being warned is it expected to be very busy. West Northamptonshire Council predict queues for visitors and acknowledge these can be frustrating, but ask that people be patient whilst their staff work hard to keep things moving. The site will be open throughout the weekend from 10am to 4pm, although there may be times when it needs to close temporarily to compact waste, or for traffic management.
Fire at Oxford Road property in Banbury

Emergency services have been dealing with a shed and garage fire at a property opposite the Horton General Hospital in Banbury. Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service were called at 11.28am. They sent three fire engines to the blaze in the Oxford Road, from Banbury, Hook Norton and Bicester fire stations. Fire crews currently remain at the scene. South Central Ambulance Service are also reported to have been called to the scene.
Donation funds new bladder scanner at Horton General A&E

A friendship society, which organises social events and wellbeing support for people, has donated funding to purchase a £12,000 bladder scanner for the Horton General Hospital. Two members of the North Gloucestershire Oddfellows recently visited the hospital to see the equipment, which is now being used in the Emergency Department to help diagnose urinary retention and other bladder issues.
Pubs found serving short measures

Over half of the drinks purchased by undercover trading standards officers at 10 Oxfordshire pubs were found to be short measured. Officers from Oxfordshire County Council’s trading standards team posed as members of the public and ordered wine, beer, or whisky, which they then measured. Of the drinks ordered 12 of 16 glasses of wine were short measured. One of the two shots of whisky in the test also fell short. However, in all cases the beer served was a full measure.
Vast majority of September school starters placed at first choice school

Parents of children who will be starting primary education this September woke this morning to the news of which school their child has been allocated. Today is National Offer Day for primary school places. In Oxfordshire 94.04 percent of children were given a place at their parents first choice school. In West Northamptonshire the figure was 94.6 percent.
Order should help people feel safer and enjoy exploring Banbury town centre

A public spaces protection order has been put in place in Banbury town centre and People’s Park. This gives the police and council additional powers to impose fines for a number of types of antisocial behaviour. These include aggressive begging, nuisance, street drinking and actions that cause alarm or distress. Its hoped the initiative will help Banbury visitors, workers, and residents feel safer and enjoy exploring the town centre.
Banbury treatment works capacity to increase by 84 percent

By 2029 the Banbury Sewage Treatment Works will be able to process 490 litres of wastewater per second – an increase of 84 percent over the 266 litres per second it can currently deal with. Thames Water is carrying out a £14.7 million upgrade at the works, which should result in a greatly reduced risk of storm overflows into local rivers during spells of heavy rainfall, when sewer systems can become overwhelmed.
Garden machinery stolen during shed break-ins

Police are investigating two separate incidents of thefts from garden sheds in local villages. In both cases garden machinery was taken, including a chain saw. In Greatworth a break-in occurred in South Close between Thursday April 10 at 4.30pm and 7.30am the following morning. A number of items of garden machinery were taken. In a separate incident a break-in took place in Kings Sutton. The shed on Richmond Street was entered at some point between Saturday March 1 and last Sunday (April 13).
