Pretty much everyone in New England was disappointed with how little Drake Maye played in the preseason opener and Jerod Mayo promised more snaps for the No. 3 overall pick Thursday night against the Eagles at Gillette Stadium. Mayo delivered on his promise and Maye delivered in his increased reps, leading a pair of second quarter scoring drives, even if it ended up a 14-13 loss for the Patriots.

There is a good chance the Patriots got significantly better this week with the trade of veteran Pro Bowl pass rusher Matthew Judon to the Falcons for a third-round pick. Oh, no, not better for the 2024 season or a hellacious schedule against elite QBs and passing attacks, the kind of situations which call for a player of Judon's specific set of skills. Nope. The 2024 Patriots got markedly worse with Judon and his contract-desiring circus sent packing to Atlanta.

Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells used to famously say that NFL teams are what their record says they are. But, in August, there are no records. All teams are 0-0 at this point, relative equals. Right? So theoretically the Patriots are on a level playing field with an Eagles team that they unfortunately literally shared a practice field with this week in a joint workout session in Foxborough. The revealing reality of the joint practice action was simple.
