OXFORD, Miss. — When Lane Kiffin made what most folks thought was a joke after a 52-20 win over Duke in the Gator Bowl, nobody really appeared to take it seriously. After all, quarterback Jaxson Dart had declared for the NFL Draft. You can probably forget all those old rules about not contacting an agent to keep that hope alive. With all of the stuff going on in college football these days, it’s hard to see that would be a problem.

OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss coach Chris Beard is seeing a lot of what Arkansas coach John Calipari did when he was at Kentucky for 15 years. He’ll see it again Wednesday night in Fayetteville, Ark. “The team and the roster has his DNA all over it,” Beard said Monday before the team left.

Somehow, though, you don’t get the reaction another 10-win season what he’s hoping is momentum for something bigger. After rolling through a depleted Duke, 52-20, Kiffin knows full well he’s put the Rebels at a place they haven’t been in 62 years (some of us are actually old enough to remember those days a little) and the potential now may be even bigger.

OXFORD, Miss. — It took Ole Miss awhile to let Mississippi State blow out the energy they had at the start, but then took a 26-14 win at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium to close out the regular season. The Rebels, now 9-3, will have to wait until Tuesday to find out their status for the College Football Playoff. That won’t be known for a couple of weeks. To even think about the playoffs, though Ole Miss had to win this game.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — When Jaxson Dart overthrew a pass into triple coverage late, you knew a last-chance drive by Ole Miss was in trouble. When Florida intercepted it pretty much closed the door on a 24-17 win and ended the Rebels’ chance to get into the College Football Playoff. To be fair, Dart had Antwane “Juice” Wells somewhat in the area, but over threw the ball so badly it never had a chance. He either overthrew Wells or short-armed a pass intended to be over everybody’s head.

OXFORD, Miss. — If Ole Miss ends up making some noise in the College Football Playoff, just remember Rebels coach Lane Kiffin may have given everybody a warning. Quit looking at college football the way you have for the last century. If you don’t know how to gauge an NFL team through a season, it would be smart to figure it out. That alone could reduce your stress level going forward. Like any other sport that has a playoff, that’s the first goal — just have a chance.
