    The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) announced on Thursday that it will resume a commercial service from Pretoria to Kempton Park effective immediately. This, said the rail agency, brings the number of recovered lines to 20 out of 40, with trains now running on 26 operational lines in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Prasa said it has made significant progress in rehabilitating vandalised stations, with a total of 230 stations refurbished to basic functionality.

    Author and activist Zoleka Mandela is being honoured at a memorial service at the Mandela family home on Thursday. Mandela passed away on Monday after a long battle with cancer. In a statement on Tuesday, the family confirmed that the 43-year-old succumbed on Monday evening. “Recent scans revealed significant disease progression including fibrosis in the lungs as well as several emboli,” read the statement.

    A family of seven was saved by the police and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) before their vehicle could be smuggled into Mozambique. According to Mpumalanga police, the family was allegedly kidnapped from their residence in KaMaqhekeza in Mpumalanga and forced into the family vehicle, a Toyota Fortuner.

    Motorists have been advised to avoid the M1 highway between Booysens and Xavier roads in the south of Johannesburg following a shootout between cops and suspected cash-in-transit heist robbers on Wednesday night. One of the suspected robbers was left dead and two others were arrested. A police officer is recovering in hospital after he was hit during a gun battle. Police have since launched a manhunt for two members of the group who managed to escape.
