    After a sunny, dry January, we are set to get our first real blast of winter this weekend. The Lower Mainland could see between 10 and 20 centimetres of snow, and the City of Vancouver says it is getting ready. It says it is busy salting sidewalks and streets and will prioritize plowing major traffic routes and streets close to hospitals. Calum Baynham, the city's associate director of street operations, says they have been preparing in anticipation of extreme weather.

    Students from the South Surrey White Rock Learning Centre and supporters are protesting to keep their school open after the Surrey School District was told there aren't enough funds to keep the alternative school open. The school is slated to close in June, with the district saying it can't afford to renew the lease of the building. This is a devastating blow to the students here, many of whom shared vulnerable stories of life before their alternate education.

    Port Moody police were called to Eagle Ridge Hospital Tuesday after reports of a man waving a machete in a threatening manner in the ER. The incident triggered a "Code Silver" at the facility, a code used when someone is posing a threat of violence with a dangerous weapon. "We treated this as a high-priority call," said Const. Sam Zacharias of the Port Moody Police Department.

    The historic Dunsmuir House is set for demolition this weekend. The Dunsmuir was built in 1909 as a hotel and was eventually converted into a shelter. The 116-year-old building, located on the corner of Richards and Dunsmuir, has been deemed unsafe by the City of Vancouver. The city says it's disappointed with the owners of the building and says it plans to implement stronger measures to prevent the neglect of vacant buildings by private owners in the future.

    Some residents who live near a supportive housing unit in Richmond are voicing their concerns about safety in the area. Locals say they have seen an increase in open drug use around the temporary modular housing on Alderbridge Way, and say they no longer feel safe in the neighbourhood.
