May 5, 2024 Dear reader,Two years ago, I joined the Northern Star as an opinion columnist. My first piece was basically a look both ways on in-person vs. online classes. Today, I am signing off. My time at the Northern Star became a defining feature in not only my college career but my life. I learned what kind of work I want to do. I learned what success is to me. I found what pushes me to want to be better, to grow.

The ninth annual Latin American Music Awards, Latin AMAs, will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday. The theme of this year’s award show will be, “We Speak Música.” The Latin AMAs will be co-hosted by Alejandra Espinoza, Carlos Ponce and none other than the queen of Latin pop, Thalía.

DeKALB – The Northern Star has begun a partnership with NIU’s chapter of the American Meteorological Society to produce weekly forecasts each Monday. Founded in 1971, AMS is a student organization recognized by the Department of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment. “Our objective is to provide professional opportunities for primarily undergrads but also undergrads and grad students here at NIU,” said Kelvin Hawthorne, president of NIU’s AMS chapter.

February 18, 2024 Best of DeKalb voting for 2024 is now open! From Monday to Feb. 29 NIU students, faculty and staff, along with DeKalb residents, can vote on their favorite places in 22 categories. Some of the categories include best bar, best coffee shop, best place to watch sports and more. Votes are limited to one vote per category per person. Voters will be asked to provide their first and last name along with their email address. Winners will be announced March 19 in print and online.

February 15, 2024 Gino Chavez, a senior marketing major, predicted the winning team of Super Bowl LVIII and his predicted score was one point off for each team. Chavez believed the Kansas City Chiefs would win over the San Francisco 49ers 24-21. Sunday, the Chiefs won the Super Bowl 25-22 in overtime. “I knew it was gonna be Chiefs winning,” Chavez said. “Score wise, it was kind of just a blind guess.” While Chavez believed the Chiefs would win the game, he was rooting for the 49ers.

February 5, 2024 The 66th annual Grammys brought jaw dropping moments, stunning fashion and breathtaking performances. Dua Lipa opened the award show at 7 p.m. Sunday with her song “Training Season.” After the opening performance, host Trevor Noah walked around the audience and introduced viewers to the star-studded attendees. Noah complimented stars up and down for their accomplishments in the last year.

DeKalb – Starting Monday, NIU’s Division of Outreach, Engagement and Regional Development will celebrate Global Community Engagement Week. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday the division of OERD will host a table at the Holmes Student Center to share with students their initiative, hear from students and allow other organizations on campus to share their programs. “Global engagement day is Jan. 28, every year, and that just happened to fall on a Sunday this year.
