Research ArticleRENEWABLE ENERGY Over the next few decades, African energy systems are expected to undergo profound changes. The total electricity demand is predicted to increase by 5 to 6% per year over the next 10 years until 2050 (1–3), an increase that is driven by sustained population growth, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa (4), and the continuous infrastructural investments aimed at improving energy access and living standards, especially in the least-developed areas (5, 6).
