The USU has announced Jania Jancu has been appointed as the new USU CEO, with her term starting in January next year. Jancu replaces Michael Bromley who was appointed in April on a six month contract after the resignation of Andrew Mills. Before her role as ReachOut Australia’s Director of Operations, Jancu was UNSW’s Scholarship Manager and served on the University’s Board between 2010 and 2012. She was also Chief of Staff to Lucy Turnbull during her term as Lord Mayor of Sydney.

A lack of portfolio reports made the public session of the October USU Board meeting uncharacteristically short. The Board discussed the USU’s deficit in September, a new agreement with the University to give the union deductible gift recipient (DGR) status, and the USU’s 2025 SSAF applications. The meeting opened with the September financial report delivered by Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Michelle Tonge. The USU recorded a $187,000 deficit with an annual surplus still expected.

The election for the postgraduate and undergraduate fellows of the University Senate has been suspected due to “allegations of possible irregularities,” in the ballots. The news was communicated to all of the candidates in an email from the Returning Officer and the University says it is “considering these allegations carefully.”No detail on the nature of the irregularities was given in the email.

Student’s options range from from Liberal and Labor SRC Councillors to a range of faculty and society representatives. In a crowded field, Honi Soit interviewed six candidates to understand their policy priorities and what makes them stand out. Many of the candidates already have experience in University governance.

Directed by Ali Bendall, Jane Eyre is the final production in the Genesian Theatre on Kent St as the theatre is set to relocate to an old school hall in Rozelle. Brontë’s gothic drama not only matched the theatre space but was rewarded by the fact that set designers Ali Bendall and Tom Fahy made full use of the Genesian Theatre.

The University is again proposing simple extensions be reduced to two days in the latest fight over the contentious policy that allows students to get an automatic five day extension on most assignments. The policy change would be implemented from Semester 1 2025, and students who need more than two days will need to go through the more arduous special consideration system, providing documentation proving illness or misadventure.
