It’s finally fall and hopefully there will soon be that wonderful snap in the air as cooler weather worms its way into the Boro. Fall…it’s my favorite! In this issue, we have a little spooky, a big celebration, and a great tradition. Our cover feature focuses on the spectacular 75th anniversary of Bulloch County Parks & Recreation. What a great 75 years it’s been, and there are countless lives that have been made better because of the department’s outreach.

Things got just a little bit cooler in Statesboro, beginning in May 2021. Since that time, BigDog SnowCones has been serving up delicious cool treats all over the Boro and beyond. Owned by Julie and Ivey Miller, BigDog is named for the couple’s Great Danes, George and Oscar. George is the senior pup, now 5 years old and weighing 185 pounds. Oscar is the baby, just 2 years old — but he weighs in at 214 pounds.

At 18 years old, Katherine Whitlock is a recent graduate of Bulloch Academy, and an accomplished dancer. She’s been accepted at Florida State University, where she will begin classes this fall. But she is also a fighter — a fighter who has battled against spina bifida occulta — and is winning. Katherine was born in November 2004 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

When you start thinking about small business in the Boro, trust us, your head will just about explode. There are so many locally owned small businesses in Statesboro, and they are all amazing, and doing great things. We decided that in this issue, we would spend some time focusing on some of those businesses. We wish we had room to give space to them all, but we picked a few that we think you’ll enjoy reading about. First of all, there’s Watersedge Design Company, founded and owned by Brandon Jones.

By ANGYE [email protected] Cindy Hatchell, assistant library manager and manager of Youth & Family for the Statesboro-Bulloch County Library, had a vision. She wanted to teach local children about kindness, and to help them put into action what they learned. The summer reading club at the library has a theme each year, and this year’s theme has been “Altogether Now,” giving participants the opportunity to learn kindness, community and unity.
