    Throughout the recent chaos in American politics, AI chatbots have struggled to stay abreast of the latest news. Reporting showed that hours after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, ChatGPT said the shooting was rumor and misinformation. The same reporting also found that popular chatbots struggled to provide accurate answers in the aftermath of JD Vance’s VP nomination, as well as President Joe Biden’s COVID diagnosis.

    When I think of my mom’s blue Volvo 240 station wagon, I recall a sweltering spring day in the mid-1990s. The vehicle’s air conditioning was struggling against the Florida heat. As sweat made the bottom half of my body stick to the cognac leather seats, my innards were in shambles. Not too long before my mother had gathered my brother and me from school, I had managed to win the Easter egg hunt. The eggs, however, were not plastic and filled with treats.

    It was around noon on Friday, January 8, 2021. I was sitting at a folding table in my apartment, in Harlem; my laptop displayed a blank, untitled Google document. Ambulance sirens wailed outside—the sound of the pandemic. I closed my eyes, inhaled, and placed my hands on my knees; my palms pressed into the fabric of my joggers. For years, I’d been doing breathing exercises at yoga class to still my mind and calm my nervous system. I drew upon those lessons now, as I exhaled through my nose.

Like many people, Barnett had captured my attention as a “Boeing whistleblower” in the Netflix documentary Downfall: The Case Against Boeing. Unlike many people, when the documentary was released, I was secretly blowing the whistle. In early 2022 I was wracked with guilt.
