It is highly prestigious and sought-after. With its history tracing back to the early 1800s, its relevance in Oxford students’ day-to-day lives, social activities and career prospects cannot be understated.

The University has recently confirmed that multiple Preliminary Exams and Finals will be assessed as in-person, computer based exams in 2023/24. These include English, Classics, Biochemistry, Theology, and the MBA. Preliminary exams “across a number of subjects” and “several Social Sciences Division and Humanities MPhils” will also be typed. For English, students were made aware of this decision in October 2023 ahead of the May 2024 exams cycle.

Oxford’s scientists from the Population Health’s National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit, in collaboration with MBRRACE-UK, have published a report which helps identify improvements needed in the maternity sector. The study, Saving Lives, Improving Mothers’ Care report, comprehensively outlines the number of expecting women who died during, or up to a year after, pregnancy between 2019 – 2021.

An Oxford led team of scientists have recently revealed the results of a unique collaborative project which looked to explore the source of the greatest recorded seismic event on Mars. The study indicated that the quake was a consequence of enormous tectonic forces within Mars’ crust and ruled out the possibility of a meteorite impact. This seismic event (S1222a) was recorded by NASA’s InSight lander last year, on Wednesday 4th May 2022.

New research from Oxford’s Nuffield Politics Research Centre, in collaboration with the Resolution Foundation, highlights that members of the older generations are increasingly motivated to support economic policies that help the younger generations, as many are personally concerned for their own family members.

An independent study, conducted by Oxford scientists, found no evidence that Facebook had an adverse impact on well-being. Despite widespread claims about the negative impact of social media platforms on welfare, research piloted by Professor Przybylski and Professor Vuorre at the Oxford Internet Institute, found that their conclusions were quite the opposite.

Breaches and brotherhood … the secret world of freemasonry is something largely obscure and unknown to the uninitiated. After spending some time among the brethren of the Oxford Apollo Lodge, this is what Cherwell found. What is Freemasonry and what is the Apollo Lodge? Freemasonry is one of the world’s largest non-religious, non-political, and charitable organisations. Its roots can be traced back to medieval stonemasons and Cathedral builders.

As the Oxford Union nears the end of Trinity Term, Cherwell can exclusively reveal 4 additional speakers. American actor Gabriel Macht will be speaking at the Union later in the term. Macht is best known for playing the confident, high-flying, ambitious lawyer, Harvey Specter, in the hit-series Suits. In this, he famously co-starred alongside Patrick J. Adams, Rick Hoffmann and Meghan Markle (Duchess of Sussex). Additionally, American actor Ed Norton is also amongst the list of speakers.

Estimates predict that there is currently more than a one in four chance of another global pandemic in the next decade, and scientists are seeking to find ethical solutions. However, scientists are unable to estimate what kind of pandemic it will be. Whilst it could be a coronavirus (like COVID or SARS) or influenza, there is also the possibility of something which has not been seen before. This unknown future threat is referred to by The World Health Organisation as “Disease X”.
