If you wander South Downtown in the middle of the week, there are still rows of shuttered storefronts and darkened windows lining the streets. One of the data center developments would include a dozen buildings and three substations. Another would devote more than 300 acres for single-family homes. It wouldn't be a normal week in metro Atlanta lately without the unveiling of plans for a data center. In the past week, data center developments have been proposed in Bartow, Newton and Spalding counties. New plans continue to pop up as digital infrastructure expands, especially with the popularization of generative artificial intelligence.

Block Inc., the fintech parent company of payment platforms Cash App and Square, is laying off about 10% of the workforce at its Atlanta office. The company will cut about 49 employees at its North Avenue office, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice submitted to the state. Block employs about 474 people at the office, per the notice. These layoffs are part of larger cuts across the company.

Sonny Perdue welcomed Kia to West Point as the auto manufacturer set up an assembly plant worth $2.8 billion and covering 2,200 acres. This week, Perdue, now chancellor for the University System of Georgia, witnessed a grand opening for Kia's sister company, Hyundai Motor Group's Metaplant America in Ellabell.
