All schools in six border districts of Punjab — Ferozpur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran — have been shut until further orders. The state, which shares a 532-km border with Pakistan, also saw the cancellation of all public gatherings in border areas. Along with Punjab, the border states of Rajasthan and Gujarat and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir were placed on high alert following intense retaliatory shelling from across the border in several areas.

A day after the Indian military hit nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir as part of Operation Sindoor, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh informed political parties that least 100 terrorists and their associates were neutralised in the non-escalatory strikes. Chairing an all-party meeting at the Parliament House Complex here, Rajnath also said the operation, a national response after the dastardly April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, was "not yet over".
Blackout drill held across country to test war readiness

The country on Wednesday witnessed mock drills across several states as blackouts were conducted in cities ranging from Punjab to Tripura as per the directives of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which had advised states to undertake the precautionary measure to prepare the public in the eventuality of an armed conflict. On May 5, the MHA had directed states to conduct mock drills on May 7 as advised by the Directorate General of Civil Defence, Fire Services and Home Guards.

The nationwide mock drills will begin around 4 pm on Wednesday. The states will, however, have the freedom to start the exercise as per their convenience since “it is aimed at self-learning”, highly placed sources said.
