    Tensions ran high Monday night as the Sunnyside City Council voted to place City Manager Mike Gonzalez on paid administrative leave for 30 days, effective immediately. The decision followed a more than 90-minute closed-door executive session and was approved in a 5-2 vote. Councilmembers Vicky Frausto and Julia Hart opposed the motion. “We’re putting an administrator on leave, and that’s going to be paid — or bringing in an investigator that’s going to be paid,” Frausto said.

    The Sunnyside School District is once again offering free summer meals to all children 18 and under, helping to fill a nutrition gap many students face while school is out. The eight-week program begins June 16 and runs through Aug. 15, with meals available Monday through Friday at three locations in Sunnyside: Sunnyside High School, Central Park near the community pool, and the Sunnyside Community Center.

    A new statewide initiative is giving Washington students more than just exercise — it’s equipping them with lifelong bike safety skills and building their confidence on and off the road. The Let’s Go! Bicycle Education Program, a collaboration between the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), the Cascade Bicycle Club, and regional Education Service Districts (ESDs), integrates hands-on bicycle instruction into physical education classes for students in grades 3 through 8.
