Eustacia Jones was praying, on her knees, in her car, as her husband maneuvered their car past fallen trees and “fires everywhere,” up to 2751 Fair Oaks Ave. in Altadena. It was 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, and Jones, 38, was driving from her Rose Bowl neighborhood to Altadena to evacuate her grandmother Jean Roberts, 75. The Eaton fire, which broke out the night before, was raging through town. Time was running out.

Extra points for bringing a Rubi’s order back for his wife, too. Rubi’s at the Quad is closing after 29 years. The Burlington Coat Factory one door down closed in 2024.
