Muslims in Delhi have largely thrown their weight behind the AAP in the last two assembly elections. But the party’s soft Hindutva, its positions on the NRC-CAA protests and the Tablighi Jamaat-Covid controversy, the Delhi riots, and issues of development have triggered disenchantment within sections of the community. Of seven assembly constituencies which have Muslims as the decisive voter, Newslaundry visited two where the AIMIM has fielded Delhi riots accused to utilise the anger.

Yamuna rejuvenation has been among the issues over which the AAP government and the LG have taken potshots at each other. In January 2023, the National Green Tribunal formed a high-level committee to tackle pollution in the Yamuna. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena was made its chairperson. The panel has held at least 10 meetings between January 2023 and August 2024. LG Saxena attended only five, according to the response to an RTI query filed by Newslaundry.

The farmers’ protest in Gautam Buddha Nagar over inadequate compensation for government land acquisition entered its third day. The farmers continued demanding fair compensation and assurance that 10 percent of the acquired land will be allotted to them, as per law. On December 3, the farmers protested at Noida’s Dalit Prerna Sthal, and a five-member team was formed to consider their demands. But late in the evening, the police detained 123 farmers protesting at the site.
