It’s been five years since the first probe lens by Laowa was launched with a hefty price tag ($1,449.00). But now, a newcomer lens manufacturer Astrhori has come out with their own affordable prob lens version: The Astrhori 18mm f/8 Macro Probe Len. And it’s specifically designed for APS-C cameras. “Affordable” is relative, of course, but $719.00 for a tool that can solve a lot of problems and open up creative possibilities for LEGO and miniature-scale photographers is worth checking out.

Shooting the interior of a brick-built scene can be very challenging for a LEGO photographer because most models restrict camera angles and limit lighting opportunities. When I shoot official LEGO sets, I have to really work around what the designer of the set has created, with displayability and playability as their priorities. It’s a lot easier to shoot a MOC (My Own Creation) because I have designed it with different priorities: camera angles and lighting.

Now that Instagram has transformed into a short-form video platform geared towards creators and influencers looking to go viral, where do we hobbyists and enthusiasts share our photos and find other photographers? It’s not Flickr: the user base isn’t mainstream enough. It’s not Twitter either: that’s mostly topical posts like news and opinion. Discord isn’t really a social network, but a group chat. And Facebook is a joke. It’s Tumblr. (Wait, hear me out).
