    Save I began this year, like most years, wishing somebody in my family would get a dog. I'd pinned my hopes on my brother, the least peripatetic of us, a lawyer in a long-term relationship, living in a house with a backyard. He had spoken for years about his hypothetical dog, a samoyed named Pomelo, and each time I saw him and his partner I would ask if they haddone any research, joined a waiting list, edged any closer to making this imagined dog real. It never felt imminent.
