The modem dial-up sound needs its own trigger warning. For us geriatric millennials who grew up waiting (im)patiently for a single .jpg to load, the sound will conjure up bleary screen-addled eyes, and the heart-thumping drama of early YouTube (who remembers the Lonelygirl15 videos?). Technology has been a preoccupation for horror filmmakers since Fritz Lang’s Metropolis showed the very first humanoid robot, and then sent a woman to the moon in the weirdly prescient Woman in the Moon.

Not all horror films have the same intentions. Some horrors well and truly want to rip your soul to shreds, like The Exorcist or Candyman. Others want to create a classically chilly atmosphere, making you look into the corners looking for ghosts, like The Others or Paranormal Activity. There’s films that want to play around with body parts like they’re playdoh, like the recent The Substance or anything by Stuart Gordon or David Cronenberg. And then there’s some that just want to make you giggle.
