I hadn’t traveled much before my first ever solo trip to Thailand last month. I often thought about it, and asked friends to go with me. But they either didn’t have money, or they were coupled up and doing their own thing. Others just weren’t interested in having an adventure. It got to the point where I thought, “I’m going to stop waiting for other people.” I was ready for something exciting: I wanted to push myself by meeting people and trying new experiences.

My first solo trip to Bali was five years in the making. I kept seeing Flash Pack adventures pop up on my Instagram feed, and every single one looked out-of-this-world. But it was also quite a difficult time of life for me. We went through Covid, and I made a decision to trade my London commute for village life. I also suffered from social phobia (made worse by multiple lockdowns). So I had to work on myself first, including lots of therapy.

As someone who struggles with social anxiety, being around people in a group setting terrifies me. I am generally reserved and don’t jump into conversations easily. I get stressed about the fact that everyone will have exciting things to talk about, and I won’t be able to match that or keep them interested in what I have to say. And when I get overwhelmed, I’ll do everything I can to disappear. I’ll become very quiet, and I’ll generally need a period of time alone to recharge.
