    1 Introduction: Self-organization of biological systems nested within other biological systems The question of what the “self” is and how it is related to bodily and brain processes has attracted a considerable number of empirical and theoretical treatments (Gallagher, 2000; see Northoff et al., 2006; Qin et al., 2021, for reviews). Recent work proposed a biologically grounded framework for understanding selfhood (Levin, 2021; Lyon, 2020).
