    Amnesty International recorded 1,518 executions under the death penalty worldwide in 2024, marking an increase of 32 percent since the year before when 1,153 people were put to death. This marks the highest execution level since 2015. Three countries – Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia – accounted for 91 percent of all known executions, together totalling 1,380. Egypt, Singapore and Yemen also recorded significant increases, while Somalia had a decrease.

    Non-U.S. citizens are over three times more likely to have their devices checked at the U.S. border than those who hold a U.S. passport. Data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection shows that of the 47,047 electronics devices checks in the fiscal year of 2024, running from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024, 36,506 were of non-U.S. citizens, while 10,541 were of U.S. citizens. On average, searches have historically been relatively rare.

    Water conflicts are on the rise around the world, according to data from the Pacific Institute. In the first four years of this decade alone, there have been 785 recorded water conflicts worldwide. This is already 27 percent higher than the number of conflicts linked to water resources of the entire decade from 2010-2019, when 620 such events were reported in total. As this chart clearly illustrates, the frequency of water conflicts is growing exponentially.
