On May 10, 1972, three gay men were brutally attacked and thrown into Adelaide's River Torrens/Karrawirra Parri. There were claims — never proven — that the attacks were committed by police officers; members of the so-called vice squad. "It was called 'teaching the fairies how to swim'," explains playwright Alana Valentine.

Sydney-based artist Laura Jones has won the $100,000 Archibald Prize for her portrait of author Tim Winton, becoming only the 12th woman to win the prize in its 103-year history. The painting bested 56 other finalists, selected from 1,005 entries, including portraits of activist Julian Assange and Saltburn actor Jacob Elordi. Jones's win follows last week's announcement of the 2024 Packing Room Prize, which was awarded to Melbourne street artist Matt Adnate for his portrait of musician Baker Boy.

Archibald Prize season is upon us. It's the nation's most prestigious and recognisable portrait prize, awarded annually to the tune of $100,000. The finalists for 2024 will be announced tomorrow morning, selected from thousands of entries posted and hand-delivered to the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The 50-60 chosen portraits will go on display alongside finalist works for the landscape and genre painting categories — the Wynne and Sulman prizes — before touring the country.
