What if there were a simple technique that let you photograph what’s directly in front of you and what’s behind you at the same exact time, in the same exact frame? Stefan Falke found a way to capture everything that’s around him not in a distorted 360-degree image but a completely flat perspective. It all started as a visual experiment. One day in 2023, Falke bought a handheld mirror from CVS for $10 with only a vague idea of what he wanted to do with it artistically.

だまされてはいけない。ナショナルジオグラフィック（TV）の新シリーズ「PHOTOGRAPHER：ファインダー越しの世界」は、画像を分析するといった内容ではない。ライティングや被写界深度、適正なアングルなどの話も、ほとんど出てこない。そうではなく、“完璧な1枚”のためなら何でもする人々を突き動かすものは何なのかを観察する内容なのだ。フォトグラファーは「死ぬほど努力する」ものだと、ファッションフォトグラファーのキャンベル・アディは言う。だが、この新しいドキュメンタリー番組であるPHOTOGRAPHERは、その理由を描写することを目指している。ナショナルジオグラフィックのほか、Disney+や米国のHuluで公開されているるPHOTOGRAPHERは、6つのエピソードから構成されている。それぞれのエピソードは、フォトグラファーが特定のプロジェクトに取り組むプロセスを追う1時間だ。これまで20年間にもわたって『WIRED』でフォトエディターを務めてきた立場からすると、過去に多くのフォトグラファーを起用してきたものの、それでも多くの写真の裏側には知られざる深い奮闘の秘密があった。...
