President Donald Trump has announced his business tariffs – and the UK is being charged 10 per cent from April 5, 2025. The UK hasn’t been hit as hard as other parts of the world, such as the EU, which has to pay a 20 per cent tariff. UK companies that export to the USA are going to be the most harshly affected. According to the BBC, the most widely sold exports are cars (£9 billion), medicines and pharmaceutical products (£6.6 billion) and mechanical power generators (£4.6 billion).

Today is Spring Forecast, usually known as Spring Statement, day. As we’ve established, there’s not likely to be much for small businesses, especially after the tax hikes seen in last year’s Autumn Budget. UK company size thresholds are set to change from April 6, 2025, rising by around 50 per cent. This most likely means that your company could be changing from a medium-sized to small or a small to microbusiness. The government hopes that the changes will result in 113,000 small businesses and LLPs becoming microbusinesses; 14,000 shifting from medium-sized business to small and 6,000 moving from large to medium-sized.
