London Lights
There’s something about returning to London around December that fills me with delight. I love the subtle and understated Christmas lights in Soller and the lack of hysteria and bustle at Yuletide but there is something gloriously buzzy and exciting in the capital. The reason I was back in London was because I’d been voted one of ten winning crime authors in a film competition with a large online audience.

As I ran along empty C’an Repic beach in Port Soller early yesterday morning, I stopped to admire the clarity of the glass-like water. Graceful ducks and seabirds glided along with a backdrop of craggy cliffs, the old Soller lighthouse and a never-ending bale of silky blue sea. There wasn’t a yacht or human in sight and boy, did I relish the peace. This is wintertime in Mallorca and all the visitors have left.

Black comedy comes in many forms but surely it is at its bleakest and best with the current daily news bursts about inane TV offerings, I’m a Celeb and Strictly. Given the calamitous state of the world with the very real threat of WWIII heralded by an expert from NATO, coupled with Sweden and Germany dusting down their survival bunkers, the deliberate cynicism of the media is all too much.

Racist Dogs in Wales
How the media loved the earnest report issued by Climate Cymru BAME, advising the Welsh government to consider banning dogs from green spaces in Wales to combat racism. I hadn’t really considered whether dogs were racist or cats, for that matter, but thanks to this joyless Welsh think tank, now I know. Funnily enough, my hens do seem quite racist, and I have often taken them to task on the matter.

For example, Qatar has announced that it is expelling Hamas leaders residing there, and in the UK a raft of eminent authors have signed a letter urging Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, not to oppose the new law regarding Freedom of Speech in higher education.

Should the Soller tunnel be reinstated? | Archives
I was stopped in the local supermarket last week by a belligerent elderly local. She wanted my opinion on overtourism in Soller. I braced myself as this thorny topic has rapidly become a no-go area in our valley. There’s a fury about house purchase and rental prices, insufferable traffic and lack of parking.

As soon as September arrives, I sigh with relief. The sun is less harsh, the crowds begin to dissipate and there’s a freshness in the air. Sleeping at night is easier and the landscape begins to awaken with green shoots popping up and soft green grass forming over previously arid turf. Normally, I attempt to run during the summer but this year I threw in the towel at the end of June. Instead, I swam and kept up a modicum of Pilates with one class a week to keep me ticking over.

The honeymoon period is firmly over for Sir Keir Starmer, just when he was attempting to have a family holiday. It’s a bummer for politicians, but do we care? Of course not. As Starmer’s own Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, admitted last week, trust in politicians is ‘rock bottom’. Too damned right.

Now that the dust has temporarily settled after a series of anti-tourism demonstrations in Mallorca, one has to wonder what will come next. As we enter the hottest month of the season, there’s a chance that campaigners might flag somewhat and take a break from beating the drum. All the same, the regional government urgently needs to resolve matters and that will hopefully come with its promised new tourism model for the Baleares.
