    TOKYO -- Japan and the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday agreed to start negotiations on an economic partnership agreement, as Tokyo hopes to boost its automobile and machinery exports while promoting investment in energy. Japan's exports to the UAE totaled 1.57 trillion yen ($11.1 billion at current rates) in 2022. The Middle Eastern country levies a 5% tariff on many items, including autos, and these account for about 60% of the total.

    TOKYO -- Japanese trading house Toyota Tsusho will develop and supply biofuels and green hydrogen with Indonesian state-run oil company Pertamina, part of efforts led by Tokyo to support decarbonization in Southeast Asia. Toyota Tsusho plans to supply these renewable energy sources to the Patimban Port and industrial park projects in West Java, which are under construction with the aid of Japanese yen-denominated loans.

    TOKYO -- Fifteen Japanese companies including Isuzu Motors and trading house Sojitz will receive government funding to create supply chains in Southeast Asia, Nikkei has learned, part of an initiative with investments estimated at 100 billion yen ($679 million). Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry soon will announce 13 demonstration projects chosen to get a combined 35 billion yen -- or $238 million -- in assistance from the state.
