In the United States, the majority of abortions are achieved through the use of the drugs Mifepristone and Misoprostol. Known as “medical abortion,” it allows women to abort their child in the early stages of pregnancy in the privacy of her own home over a period of 36 to 48 hours.

Recently, debate commenced on the Abortion Law Amendment (Health Care Access) bill which would, amongst other things, further chip away at the freedom of health practitioners to conscientiously object to participating in abortion. Currently medical practitioners in Australia have only a limited right to express their conscientious objection. This is because they have a legal duty to perform abortion in an emergency, notwithstanding that they might work in a Catholic hospital.

On my way to Williamsport on Route 11 at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, I came upon an accident. Three men from vehicles were rushing toward a small car that had flipped onto its roof (both of the car’s airbags had deployed). An electric pole had been hit and broken with lines down. One lady came from her car to see what she could do. Another kept traffic at bay (the lane where people could turn around and depart). I asked if anyone had called 911 and one replied yes.

Professional people who are pro-life and occupy positions of privilege and power should consider speaking up about abortion. This is because for the moment at least, it is not illegal to talk about abortion, subject to a few exceptions. If we don’t exercise this freedom when and where we can, we may lose it. Having said that, we would do well to remember that there is no positive duty to speak the truth if it is unlikely to do good.
