Images by Elyse ButlerDeep in the Waipiʻo lowlands, on the island of O‘ahu, the Kānaka Climbers met under a rising sun. Contrary to their name, this was no ordinary climbing excursion. Instead of chalk bags and climbing shoes, a dozen climbers were armed with trash bags and safety gloves, and rather than scrutinizing rock faces for handholds and routes, all eyes were trained on the trail underfoot.
