I have pretty much grown up, financially, on Venmo. In fact, I don’t think I’ve used cash to divvy up a bill since high school, when my friends and I pooled our dollar bills to cover the tab at a diner. Despite years of using Venmo, however, my friends and I still struggle with the unspoken rules around using the payment app to cover our share of dinners, drinks, travel costs and other shared expenses.

Before surfing was big business or was even treated like a sport, there were tribes of surfers in Southern California who built their own boards and taught each other how to ride waves. One crew began migrating away from Laguna Beach in the 1950s for Dana Point, where they were a bit more unfettered. “There was no police station, there was no fire department, there was no post office,” said Dick Metz, the founder of the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center in San Clemente and a member of the crew.
