Annual spring hummingbird migration reaches Iowa

Don't be surprised if you start seeing more of our fast, feathered friends — hummingbirds. The ruby-throated hummingbird spring migration recently reached Iowa, with sightings reported across the southern half of the state and as far north as Osage, according to Hummingbird Central. Per the website, the hummingbirds can travel over 500 miles a day when crossing the Gulf of Mexico. Once over land, they typically can travel up to around 23 miles a day.

Totals range from a tenth of an inch to maybe a third of an inch. Not expecting a big rain maker out of this one. Nonetheless, the rain will be welcomed. Tonight’s full moon is called the Pink Moon because of a particular flower that blooms this time of year. The flower is known as the phlox and is a moss-like floral that blooms in the United States. It is usually a pink hue, hence the “pink” full moon. This full moon can also be called the Passover moon to honor the Jewish holiday.The moonrise in Des Moines is at 8:07 p.m. Tuesday.

It's looking like a soggy and windy second half of this week. Southwest Iowa could see showers early Wednesday morning but, generally speaking, the highest chances of rain the rest of the week come Wednesday night and again Thursday night. Right now, it looks like severe weather will be possible out toward far southwest Iowa Thursday evening, but not in the middle of the state.
