I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy this year’s Sinulog Festival. Since its return after the pandemic, last Sunday was by far the best and took me on a nostalgic journey with its familiar scenes. The sounds, smells, and sights brought me back to my younger years. It’s no surprise that many others feel the same way. The sight of a lively downtown area is something we’ve all missed over the past few years. I still vividly remember how we had to walk from a street not closed off for the festivities.

This week is especially significant for members of the press in Cebu as we celebrate the concept of freedom, drawing from the events that transpired during the Martial Law period. That era was marked by the silencing of the press, which enabled abuses to occur unchecked. Without a vigilant media landscape to report the news, those in power were free to act with impunity. I was lucky enough to have time off over the long weekend. Just like many other locals, I also headed for the beach. My yearly promise is not just to go to any beach; I made sure that I was in one of Cebu's best: Bantayan Island. Of course, it was not an easy feat to get there. We were at par with the hundreds of thousands who were also scampering to get a trip to wherever they were headed. Others were on their way to see their families or to spend Holy Week in their hometown.

One of the topics that I look forward to teaching in my Broadcast Principles and Practices class is broadcast ethics. I make sure my class has a copy of the Kapisanan ng Brodkaster ng Pilipinas Code. With the availability of time, I ask them to read the code from front to back, making sure they understand every clause in every section. The test to their understanding is in the form of a role play where they come up with responses to certain scenarios when faced with an ethical dilemma.
