    Right next to the upcoming Humboldt Bay Trail sits a blue graffitied shipping container on L Street, home to Arcata's Bicycle Library. Volunteers open shop every Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., unless there's rain or a storm. The service is run on a pay-what-you-can system, where customers can choose to pay based on their available income. For those who can't afford them, the services and bikes are free. Visitors can rent or buy a bike that has been refurbished or get their bikes repaired.

    Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Wednesday in response to Avian Influenza, also known as “Bird Flu,” being detected in dairy cows in Southern California. This comes after the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) ordered a new national milk testing regimen to better monitor the outbreak at the beginning of the month.

    Humboldt County's favorite slimy, sluggish friend just got a promotion from redwood resident to California state symbol. The banana slug was one of three state symbols signed into legislation by Gov. Gavin Newsom last month. Alongside the fruity look-a-like, the more delicious Dungeness crab and the embattled black abalone were also officially instated as state symbols.
