Right next to the upcoming Humboldt Bay Trail sits a blue graffitied shipping container on L Street, home to Arcata's Bicycle Library. Volunteers open shop every Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., unless there's rain or a storm. The service is run on a pay-what-you-can system, where customers can choose to pay based on their available income. For those who can't afford them, the services and bikes are free. Visitors can rent or buy a bike that has been refurbished or get their bikes repaired.

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Wednesday in response to Avian Influenza, also known as “Bird Flu,” being detected in dairy cows in Southern California. This comes after the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) ordered a new national milk testing regimen to better monitor the outbreak at the beginning of the month.

Humboldt County's favorite slimy, sluggish friend just got a promotion from redwood resident to California state symbol. The banana slug was one of three state symbols signed into legislation by Gov. Gavin Newsom last month. Alongside the fruity look-a-like, the more delicious Dungeness crab and the embattled black abalone were also officially instated as state symbols.

Some sticky fingers swiped a beloved banana slug artinstallation from the Melvin Schuler Sculpture Garden at the Morris GravesMuseum of Art. On the night of Nov. 2, after over 800 community members cameout for Arts Alive, a heist was carried out to steal Morris the banana slug.

Getting pets spayed and neutered just got a lot cheaper for Rio Dell residents, with the city partnering with a new local clinic to start a new program. Residents of Rio Dell can now go to the city's resource center to receive vouchers based on their income and pet's needs. Humboldt Humane and Critters without Litters is a new clinic that opened in June, making it the only neuter and spay clinic in the county besides Humboldt Spay/Neuter Network (HSNN) in Myrtletown.

Earlier today, a car headed westbound over the Hellman bridge on Paseo Rancho Castilla lost control and crashed into three parked vehicles in front of the North Field on campus. The driver of the 2009 Audi A5 was Edward Alvarez, a resident of the area. As the crash is an ongoing investigation, University Police were not able to comment on whether or not the driver was under the influence, but said speed is believed to be a factor.

All five cultural graduations have free admission this spring, 2024. Every year, the Cross-Cultural Center (CCC) hosts APIDA Grad, Black Grad, Pride Grad, Native Grad and Nuestra Grad. In previous cultural graduation celebrations, the admission was $50. Interim President of Student Life Patrick Day said in a statement to the University Times that the funds were coming from the Division of Student Life.

The Golden Eagle Ballroom was packed with many disgruntled students, faculty and staff on March 20, as they shared their issues with the university about the King Hall building at a town hall discussion. “We have cockroaches and rats that run around in this building,” claimed Students Against Tuition Hikes (SATH) member Noah Galbraith.
