Dry conditions prompt action from county

With low precipitation and warm temperatures expected to return this weekend, Sanders County has announced that no burn permits will be issued in the county, joining similar action by Missoula County and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. "It's because of lack of moisture and, looking at the weather forecast, everything is going to be dry," said Bill Naegeli with the Sanders County Office of Emergency Management. Auto shop opens in T. Falls

A new full-service auto shop is open and ready for business in Thompson Falls. Tradewinds Tire & Services, Inc., opened for appointments April 22, and though finishing touches are still being completed on the building at 2614 Tradewinds Way, the business is booming. Co-owners Jed Howard and John Knerr have been bringing their vision of quality service to life for about a year. They each have more than 30 years of experience in the automotive and diesel fields.
Democrats elect new officers

The Sanders County Democrats met recently to elect new officers, and chairperson Shelley Eisenrich is excited about the participation the group is seeing. Eisenrich said they had 16 people attend their virtual meeting on May 23, where they elected Charles Bickenheuser as vice chairperson, Miriah Myton as secretary and Andrew Cabaccang as treasurer. “I’m grateful to find new officers,” Eisenrich said.
Noxon bridge included in Zinke funding request

U.S. Rep. Ryan Zinke is asking Congress to fund several western Montana projects, including three in Sanders County. The 15 projects were part of a package submitted by the congressman to the House Appropriations Committee, of which he is a member. Sanders County projects in the funding request include replacement of the Noxon bridge, repaving Marten Creek Road in Trout Creek, and a five-county law enforcement resilience project to purchase equipment. FWP to conduct spearfishing survey

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is conducting a voluntary survey to track participation in the new Western Fishing District spearfishing opportunity for northern pike. Starting in 2025, a licensed angler can spear northern pike while swimming or submerged in waters open to fishing, or as otherwise noted under District Standards. Spears may be hand-propelled or propelled with a spring or rubber band.
Wildfire burns north of Plains

It's only the first week of June, but dry conditions and hot, windy weekend weather fueled a wildfire north of Plains. The Banana Lake Fire started Saturday north of Plains near Banana Lake. The fire grew to 200 acres Saturday evening and by Tuesday was listed at 915 acres. One structure, a hunting cabin, has been burned in the fire, according to Nick Holloway with the Incident Management Team assigned to the fire.
Banana Lake Fire grows to 850 acres

A wildfire bruning north of Plains has grown to 850 acres as of Monday. Nick Holloway with the Western Montana All Hazards Incident Management Team told The Ledger on Monday that their team arrived Sunday evening to assume command of the fire. They will complete an infrared flight Monday evening to get more precise information on the fire, which started Saturday afternoon, and develop maps. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Highway 28 closed due to wildfire

A wildfire that started Saturday north of Plains has forced officials to close Highway 28 from the junction with Highway 200 just east of Plains to Highway 382 south of Hot Springs. The Banana Lake Fire was being fueled by strong winds Saturday evening, and Sheriff Shawn Fielders said that deputies were notifying those who might be affected, but that no evacuations have been ordered as of 7:30 p.m. The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
New owners give TF store a fresh look

A Thompson Falls business may have a new look and a new name, but the new owners are committed to serving their community. Casey and Kendra Helvey of Thompson Falls recently purchased the liquor store. They took ownership April 1 and renamed the business Top Shelf Montana. After eight months of working with former owners Myles and Missy Sexton, who had the liquor store for over four years, the Helveys were excited to get going on their remodel of the store at 915 Main Street.
Williams, Chapman win at Class C

A Noxon senior finished his high school sports career literally on top of the world last weekend. Ricky Williams won the state title in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 9.25 inches at the state meet in Missoula. Not only was it a personal record for Williams, who graduated from Noxon High School on Sunday, but it was also a new Class C state record. The previous record of 6'9" was set in 1977. There was another Sanders County champion for the state in Class C competition.
