A little digital nostalgia for the mid-2010s internetI often reflect on how much the internet has changed over the past few years, particularly in comparison to its state around 2015 or 2016. If you were online back then, you probably remember it feeling a lot different. Not better or worse exactly, just… different. Somehow, it felt more open and less controlled. More like a place where you could actually explore without being constantly pushed in one direction.

Though the conceptions of international relations that form the basis of the foreign policies of nearly all states understand governments as rational and unitary, recent overreactions and extreme political rhetoric in the United States challenge this supposition. American hyper-nationalism of the Trump era is an excellent indicator of this trend thanks to the openly racist, xenophobic, and misogynistic ideologies and policies perpetuated by the current American administration.

A studyconducted by IE Universidad and Airbus - concluding that though nearly half of Western European youth professed a fear that their nation would be at war with Russia within the next ten years, only a third of them would be willing to militarily defend their country - grabbed headlines late last year. The findings were presented as a symptom of declining national pride caused by increased apathy and political polarisation. I wish to problematise this narrative a bit.
