As a lover of sport, I have made every effort to watch the opening ceremony and feature events of each Summer Olympiad. It is a personal ritual of sorts and over the years there have certainly been spectacular and exhilarating moments. Last week, despite the “ungodly hour,” I was keen to see the opening ceremony of the Paris games. Natural tiredness meant that most of it was a blur. One exception was Celine Dion’s tribute to Edith Piaf with the Eiffel Tower as the backdrop.

Tonight, I will participate in the 2024 CEO Winter Sleepout in order to help meet the needs of homeless people. For me, this is a practical way of putting my faith into action. The sleepout is a good cause because it gives very practical help to those in need by raising money and community awareness. Over the years, a number of directors from Sydney Catholic Schools have been involved in the sleepout. For me, this is a really practical way of giving witness to our mission.

Proposed changes to the 2026 national census are a cause of concern. Specifically, the modification of the question relating to religious affiliation could result in indecipherable and ambiguous responses and a lowering of the response rate. The proposed format also makes a longitudinal analysis more difficult. The same cannot be said for the Survey of Religious Attitudes and Practices conducted by Sydney Catholic Schools. This is a biennial survey involving students in Years 5, 7, 9 and 11.

Preparing for the HSC many years ago I studied Macbeth. My double-fortune was to be taught by a Scotsman who left me with an abiding love of Donne, Elliot, Austen and the great Shakespearean tragedy. In the interceding years, I have taught “the Scottish play” many times. With each read comes fresh insights and a deeper appreciation of Shakespeare’s works and their enduring truths. Both as a student and a teacher I have had a particular love of the tragedies.

Recently, Catholics celebrated the 60th anniversary y of the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium. But, many of its intended reforms are yet to be achieved. Sadly, the decades since the council have often been characterised by deeply entrenched and divergent views. An area of particular division is that of sacred music.

Friday is a day of prayer and fasting for peace in the Holy Land. For those who live or work in the Sydney CBD, this is a great opportunity to come together as people of faith for this cause. https://t.co/BwMeqLoOhd

Six years ago today, my brother Jim died. Although he faced lots of challenges and cruelties in life he enjoyed the love of family, friends and a life-long girlfriend. No matter what happened, he never complained. Always loved and sadly missed. https://t.co/78fumr5bTv
