As the book closes on another stellar scholastic baseball season in South Jersey, we would like to honor some of the best performances. Jon Young Jr. entered the 2024 scholastic baseball season with a different mindset. “It definitely wasn’t continuing what I had always done before,” the Cherry Hill West High School senior said. “This year, it was ‘I won’t let this guy beat me.’ My goal was to win every pitch, every at-bat.”The new approach certainly paid off for the Lions’ star shortstop.

The Courier-Post South Jersey Pitcher of the Year, DeRias posted a 0.66 ERA with 91 strikeouts over 53 1/3 innings. The senior had a big impact with the bat as well, hitting .411 with 22 RBIs and eight doubles. P: Ryder Garino, Cherry Hill West. Arguably the top arm in South Jersey, the senior notched a 0.39 ERA and 94 strikeouts as the ace of the Lions’ staff.

FRANKLIN – Apparently the Delsea Regional High School baseball team doesn’t subscribe to the notion of having a short-term memory when it comes to moving past setbacks. The Crusaders returned to a familiar place on Monday, hosting the South Jersey Group 3 championship for a second-straight season. Things didn’t end the way Delsea wanted in 2023, and the Crusaders sure didn’t forget it.

Congratulations to Cherry Hill West on winning the 50th Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic and claiming the top spot in the Courier-Post Mean 15 rankings in the process. The team’s 3-1 win over Delsea gave the Lions their first Diamond Classic title since 1989. Cherry Hill West also is responsible for knocking Gloucester Catholic from atop the Mean 15 for the first time this season. The Rams fell to Cherry Hill West, 2-0, in the Diamond Classic semifinals, putting an end to their 28-game winning streak.

Anyone expecting stability in the Courier-Post Mean 15 will be disappointed as this week’s rankings proved volatile once again – unless, of course, you’re Gloucester Catholic. The Rams keep their stronghold on the No. 1 spot with a 19-0 record heading into a big weekend for the 50th Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic’s final four, which includes Gloucester Catholic, Cherry Hill West, Delsea and Northern Burlington (more on them later).

The 50th Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic is under way and there has been no shortage of upsets in the early going of South Jersey’s premier event. Those results certainly had an impact on this week’s Courier-Post Mean 15. All eyes were on Gloucester Catholic this past week as showdowns with St. Augustine and Kingsway for the Rams took center stage. Spoiler alert: Gloucester Catholic remains atop the rankings after those two contests.

May is just around the corner, and with nearly a month of action in the books many South Jersey high school baseball programs appear to be rounding into form. Gloucester Catholic has yet to blink, starting the season a perfect 10-0 and keeping its No. 1 spot in the Courier-Post Mean 15 rankings. After that, though? Plenty of change. A handful of head-to-head showdowns between ranked squads provided quite a bit of movement in the poll. On top of that, two new teams enter the rankings.

It didn’t take long for a shakeup in the Courier-Post Mean 15 as some marquee showdowns this past week led to movement throughout the rankings. Gloucester Catholic maintained its position atop the poll, but a new team climbed into picture while quite a few squads changed places in between. With the South Jersey schedule about to heat up, we should learn more about which programs are ready to solidify their positions and if others are poised to make the jump into prominence.

The South Jersey high school baseball season is finally in full swing after a soggy start to the 2024 campaign. As is typically the case in the early going, some squads are off to hot starts while others are still feeling their way through some April hiccups. And, of course, we’ve had a handful of surprise showings from a few teams these two opening weeks. One thing is for certain, a lot can, and probably will change between now and June’s state finals.
