Minority Group Files Lawsuit Against Tarrant County, Alleging Racially Gerrymandered Voting Map

After County Judge Tim O’Hare and his fellow Republican commissioners recently approved a new voting map that neuters the voices of local Blacks and Latinos, a group of minority voters filed a federal lawsuit accusing the commissioners of racial gerrymandering, violating the 1965 Voting Rights Act and the Constitution. The GOP commissioners say they are acting in a partisan nature, which is constitutional, as opposed to racial, which is not. Their goal is to flip a Democratic seat to Republican.
Protest Tomorrow/Tue Morning Over New Voting Map

In response to county commissioners’ proposed, Republican-favoring district maps that will neuter Black and Latino votes (“Ghettoization?,” May 28, 2025), a protest is planned for tomorrow/Tue downtown at Tarrant County’s G.K. Maenius Administration Building (100 E Weatherford St) at 8am, two hours before the commissioners start a meeting in which they will vote on a new map. As of this afternoon, more than 150 people have signed up to speak beforehand.

On Tue., June 3, Tarrant County commissioners will vote on a new redistricting map, one that could disenfranchise thousands of current and future Black and Latino voters locally and consolidate Republican power. The predominantly Republican commissioners court believes that Republican leadership is responsible for the county’s growth and prosperity. They argue that Republican leadership is needed to maintain that success.

With American democracy barely hanging on, I guess I expected artists to go on the attack. Here, there, everywhere. I’m disappointed they haven’t in big enough numbers but am not necessarily surprised. Art is and forever will be, and the opposite of political art, self-mythology or self-exploration, often comes across as us-mythology. An artist merely existing and practicing in this societal context says enough. No need to beat us over the head with sloganeering and caricature, I suppose.

It’s the year of the rabbit in more ways than one. First, the debut recording from the Arlington rock outfit Playtime Rabbit came out 15 years ago, when the bandmembers were late teenagers fresh out of high school. They yanked Year of the Rabbit a while back but reposted the EP onto Bandcamp just recently. “Some of the songs seemed a bit naïve in nature,” said 30-year-old Chris Bell, who fronts the band with younger brother Jordan Bell on drums and Jordan Oliver Hall on bass.
