The best way to prevent hepatitis A virus infection is with the HAV vaccine. Practicing good hand hygiene can also prevent the spread of the virus. The current recommendations are to vaccinate all children aged 12 to 23 months and all children and adolescents aged 2 to 18 years who have not previously received the HAV vaccine. We call this a “catch-up” vaccination.
