Listening to The woods, vol. 1 is like walking into a room and stumbling on a jam session between Prince, Childish Gambino and Blood Orange. This is technically an EP from newcomer Sam Austins, but at eight songs it’s stronger than some of the full-length albums released by bigger acts this year. Sonically, this EP checks a lot boxes. Electro pop, R&B, dance, funk — all of those genres are represented in this album.

Turnstile’s 2021 release Glow On is easily one of the best rock records released in the last five years. The anticipation for the band's follow-up has been unattainably high (they even got a stage mention from Charli XCX at Coachella), but the band has risen to the occasion, with an album that sounds like nothing else in modern rock — and still has mainstream appeal. Turnstile more often than not gets lumped into the vein of hardcore.

Cover the Mirrors is Ben Kweller’s seventh album and his first since the tragic death of his son at 16 due to a car accident. How does someone continue after such a tragedy? Only those who have experienced such things know. I’d like to think that Ben Kweller found solace in the creation of this new record. Cover the Mirrors is a sad record, but also a joyous piece of musicianship.

Better Dreaming takes notes from classics like Talking Heads' Speaking in Tongues and the works of Animal Collective, but with Tune-Yards' own unique spin. The record showcases Tune-Yards' musical abilities to great effect — from funk, electropop, a cappella to soul, this album is a buffet of genres. And yet it never loses the overall sound/vibe that Tune-Yards has established. The art rock vibes are strong with this one.
