Sweden are two from two to begin the 2025 World Hockey Championship on home ice, as they scored three times in the final three minutes to complete a late turnaround to beat Austria 4-2 in Stockholm in Group A. The Swedes cruised to a 5-0 victory over Slovakia on opening night 24 hours earlier, and the lack of rest seemed evident during a goalless first period, yet they forced more efforts on goal than their opponents, who pushed Finland hard in a 2-1 loss yesterday afternoon.

Finland's 2025 World Hockey Championship campaign began with an unconvincing yet victorious performance against Austria, winning 2-1 in Group A's opening match at the Avicii Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. Yet, for captain Jacob Une and head coach Jani Honkavaara, the overwhelming emotion in the aftermath was pride.

On the eve of the 2025 World Hockey Championship, the name "Leo" - or "Lion" in English - is echoing around the world. Quite the positive omen for the Leijonat - the Lions - representing Finland in Stockholm who, after back-to-back Quarter-Final exits, will be aiming to put in the kind of performance that saw the side reach three successive finals from 2019 to 2022. Incidentally, Finland's next World Championship Final appearance will be number XIV - the fourteenth.

Finland's hopes of reaching a first EHF European Championship have greatly faded after they were beaten 33-28 at home by Montenegro, who secured themselves at least second place in qualifying Group 2 and, with it, a place at the 2026 finals. The Finns must now beat group leaders Hungary away on Sunday to stand any chance of finishing as one of the best third-placed teams and make it to January's tournament hosted by their neighbours Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
