Researchers have used an AI-based screening system to identify a material that can supercharge ammonia production while using just a fraction of the energy required by current methods. The study, conducted at the University of New South Wales in Australia and published in the peer-reviewed journal Small, used a machine learning platform to sift through more than 8,000 potential metal combinations for use as catalysts.

Carbon utilisation business Carbon Upcycling Technologies has secured an $18m investment to advance its CUT CO2 system, which captures industrial carbon dioxide emissions and converts them into low-carbon cement products. The funding round was led by investor group Builders Vision, with support from others including venture capital firm CRH Ventures, low-carbon technologies specialist Oxy Low Carbon Ventures, and infrastructure business TITAN Group.

The Norwegian government has approved the second phase of the Northern Lights carbon capture project, a joint venture between TotalEnergies, Equinor, and Shell that’s being developed in Øygarden, Norway. Phase two will increase the project’s transport and storage capacity from 1.5 million tonnes to a minimum of five million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, once it is operational in 2028.

Italian chemicals company IGAT and the utility EDP Energia Italia are to build a distributed generation photovoltaic solar plant. It is the largest EDP project in Italy to be integrated with a storage system. The solar plant will be installed at IGAT’s industrial site in the province of Caserta, with total capacity of 2.5MWp, boosting the company’s flexibility in energy management and enhancing its decarbonisation.

New Zealand North Island energy distributor Powerco has completed two feasibility investigations into upgrading biogas to biomethane for use in its gas network. In April 2024, Powerco launched initiatives with Manawatū District Council (MDC) and Midwest Disposals to conduct technical analysis and engineering design at the Manawatū Wastewater Treatment Plant and the wider Manawatū Resource Recovery Park, plus Bonny Glen landfill.
