Last week, President Donald Trump issued an executive order claiming accreditors—organizations that gauge whether colleges offer quality programs—have abused their power. Accreditors, when approved by the U.S. Department of Education, have the ability to unlock federal financial aid for colleges. When those accreditors decide an institution meets their standards, that college can then access aid like Pell Grants and student loans.

The New America Higher Education Policy Team submitted comments on the Postsecondary Commission's (PSC) (an aspiring accreditor) most recent revision of its standards. The comments raise concerns that PSC is moving its central value added metric, which it has claimed will make it a very rigorous accrediting agency, out of its standards, and into policy documents that can be edited at any time.

For the past few weeks, the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has made headline-grabbing claims that it has eliminated hundreds of millions of dollars in “wasteful” government spending. DOGE is killing contracts with hefty price tags and trumpeting the savings to bolster its allegations the government is engaging in excessive and fraudulent spending.
