The London-bound plane had barely left the runway at Ahmedabad airport on Thursday before it was careening back to earth. In a video, the aircraft was seen slowly sinking behind residential buildings, before a huge fireball blast upward. Only one of the 242 people on board the Air India flight survived, according to the airline.

At least 290 people have died after a plane bound for London crashed into a residential area shortly after taking off from an airport in India’s western city of Ahmedabad. Images from the scene showed thick black smoke rising up into the sky after the Air India plane crashed, with part of the aircraft pictured resting on top of a building. Other images showed scorched trees and a fire-blackened building with first responders hosing down the area.
