The mist slowly lifts as the boat moves over the muddy waters of the Salween River in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, close to the border with Thailand. On both banks, green walls of jungle rise up, and an opalescent sky, dotted with leaden clouds, heralds the arrival of a monsoon’s downpour. Young resistance fighters, seated on either side of the boat, tune their assault rifles and monitor the fog around them.

About 1,300 people have fled from eastern Myanmar into Thailand, officials said Saturday, as fresh fighting erupted at a border town that has recently been captured by ethnic guerillas. Fighters from the Karen ethnic minority last week captured the last of the Myanmar army’s outposts in and around Myawaddy, which is connected to Thailand by two bridges across the Moei River.

A large group of 40 treks through the jungles of Myanmar (formerly Burma), their feet blistered, carrying a single backpack with their meager possessions and a kilo of rice to sustain them on their arduous journey to the Thai border. Among them are pregnant women, young students and parents cradling infants only a few months old. They have chosen to risk everything in a bid to escape the brutal violence plaguing their homeland, seeking a fresh start across the border in Thailand.

Among the N = 127,575 inhabitants 70 years and older in the municipalities of Norrtälje, Södertälje and Stockholm there was a total of 1,674 covid-19 related deaths between 1st March 2020 and 28th February 2021, with more covid-19 deaths in period 1 compared to period 2. Age standardized rates of covid-19 mortality stratified by municipality and care groups are shown in Table 1.
