Environmental sustainability This study focuses on the environmental sustainability of business operations and combines input-oriented factors (e.g., energy sources, consumption, and the use of natural resources) and output-oriented ones (e.g., the reduction of waste via sustainable products and the recycling of materials) (Taticchi et al., 2015). In this way we acknowledge that sustainable operations involve both the production process and the products and services that are provided by firms.
