On January 16, Mohammad Mateen, 40, a driver from Khaggu Sarai of Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested on charges of “disturbing peace.” His family, however, alleges that the arrest is part of an ongoing effort to force them out of their home following the “discovery” of a purported centuries-old temple adjacent to their house. Mateen bought the property in 2002 with his own earnings and has all the necessary ownership documents. He even secured a bank loan by mortgaging the house.

Mumbai’s real estate sector has always been the golden goose for many, including the city administration. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is the country’s most lucrative area of operations in the real estate business. On September 5, after a 21-day furlough, rape and murder convict and controversial godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan returned to Rohtak district’s Sunaria jail in a carcade amid heavy security cover. This was his 10th furlough or parole given at various times. Since his incarceration in 2017, he has spent 255 days out of jail so far. Observers note that Ram Rahim’s jail reprieves have invariably coincided with elections to local bodies, the Assembly, or Parliament.
