1. IntroductionIt is increasingly evident that blood-brain barrier (BBB) health is important in promoting brain health, and that BBB dysfunction is a biomarker for various brain pathologies. BBB dysfunction is usually considered in the context of disease, however, during life, the BBB can be subjected to a wide range of perturbations or stresses (Figure 1). These perturbations may be endogenous or exogenous, pathological or therapeutic, or intended or unintended.
