If you’re on a budget but don’t want the downgraded Pixel 9a, there’s a great alternative right now. Despite being released in 2023, the Pixel 8 remains a compelling option in 2025, especially with over five years of software updates left.

The 2025 F1 season is well underway, and the Formula One circus heads to Spain for round eight. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri sits at the top of the standings, but he’s only three points clear of teammate Lando Norris after the Briton won last time out in Monaco. Max Verstappen is another 22 points further back, but no one’s ruling out the Dutchman at this early stage.

So, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra was the deserving winner of our best smartphone of 2024 award, my favourite device was the Pixel 9 Pro XL. It helps that I spent three months using it as my main handset, so I came to appreciate all the small benefits that aren’t necessarily apparent. Even now, it’s the phone I keep going back to after I’ve finished a review.
